What Buddy is Made Of

Things are back to business as usual around here. I'm pretending there aren't dishes in the sink and ignoring the fact that we really need to start packing up the house...one of these days.

It was hot and humid out this afternoon, so my run was inside. The basement wasn't terribly cool either, but at least it wasn't humid. I'm a little bit off my training (since I skipped runs on both Monday and Tuesday), and I didn't feel like doing mile repeats today. Rather than repeats, I ended up doing something like a progression run, 6 miles at 8:39 pace.

Apparently, the flowers in the side yard went crazy while we were out of town - they're blooming away!

Buddy doesn't get to come with us when we go to the lake house, because they have breed specific legislation there that bans all pit bulls (which isn't really an official breed). The way the law is written, it even includes dogs that look like a pit bull. A few weeks ago we bought a dna kit from a company in Canada (that they would accept the results from) to find out just what our little mutt actually is.

We have always thought he was part Boxer, and possibly Lab. So we were more than a little surprised by the results we got yesterday.

Results for your dog Buddy

Level 2
Level 4
Level 4
Level 4
Level 5

Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Boston Terrier
Bull Terrier
Newfoundland
American Staffordshire Terrier

The lower the level number, the higher percentage result (a purebred or a dog with a purebred parent would have a level 1 result). So, unless the ban gets reversed, it looks like Buddy won't be able to come play at the lake with us. Bummer. :(

It's still fun to know what breeds he's made up of, though how Newfoundland fits in, we're not quite sure!

  1. Yea, I was surprised by the Newfoundland too! That is a shame that Buddy is being banned just because of his breed (or because he looks like a certain breed). So not fair!

    1. There's always hope that they reverse the law - that's happened in a lot of places with breed-specific legislation. Luckily Buddy loves the place we board him at, so we don't have to feel too terrible when we leave him behind.

  2. aww...buddy! That's terrible that he is banned. It's not the breed....it's the owner and how they raise the dog. My boyfriend did a DNA on his dog too. He's mostly lab but has american bulldog in him too.

    1. Yeah, breed specific legislation is dumb. The DNA was fun though! I can't see bulldog in your boyfriend's dog - too funny how the breeds mix.

  3. That is breed-ism! Sweet, innocent, adorable Buddy! I don't think there's a single dog left in the shelters that doesn't have SOME pit in them.

And that's why I'm the kind of person that would take a swab from someone else's dog and send the DNA in with a picture of my dog for testing. Buddy looks totally like a boxer to me....

My Rottie was a CGC (Canine Good Citizen) for that same reason. When we took the test (2006 or so) there wasn't a lot going on with the CGC, but I think it may have grown since then.

    1. They didn't get a picture with the swab, so at least we know they weren't swayed by his adorable looks. :)

I'll have to check out the CGC test, thanks!

  4. Newfoundland, that is so funny! Obviously he doesn't take after THAT relative too much! Bummer he can't go to the lake w/ you. :(

    1. The Newfoundland is the only place he could have gotten his size though, none of the rest of those come anywhere near his 80+ lbs! :)
